Chapter Abstract:
For robust wireless channel conditions, mobile antenna systems require high gain, wide beamsteering range and polarization agility due to their mobility in Euler angles. This chapter proposes an extremely thin Antenna‐in‐Package (AiP) with an integrated Fifth‐Generation (5G) vertically polarized endfire antenna array at 37–40GHz for compact user equipment (UE) applications. It then proposes a passive pattern‐ and polarization‐reconfigurable block cell antenna concept for mmWave 5G phased‐array architectures. The chapter presents an optimization methodology for vertical transitions that can improve the signal integrity of vertical interconnects in broadband with frequency‐independent features. From the UE's point of view, the most effective way to improve the quality of service of the mmWave link without increasing the number of radio frequency front‐end modules is to develop a multi‐modal AiP technology.
