Abstract:
A squirrel cage induction generator (SCIG) is a typical selection for the stand-alone wind turbine system and requires a capacitor for excitation. Load variation in this stand-alone system may cause the unstable voltage at the load side if the capacitor value is fixed. This study proposes a method based on thyristor switched capacitor (TSC) and stateflow control strategy, which provides a cost-effective voltage control under load variation. The proposed design has been tested in Matlab/Simulink software on three-phase system. The test is carried out by keeping the generator speed at a fixed speed while varying the load which behaves like electrical equipment that is used daily. The controller effectively controls the TSC gates to add or remove the capacitors in the system during the load variation. The results of this study show that steady output voltage within the tolerable range could be achieved by maintaining the capacitor value connected to the system using the TSC method and stateflow controller.
