Chapter Abstract:

This chapter is all about trying to work with the realities of human nature so that security leaders can build secure behaviors. When they embraces behavior management as a central goal and methodology for security leaders' awareness program, they have stepped into the transformational zone. The chapter is about building human‐aware, behavior‐based guardrails. There are a few behavior‐related concepts and tools that people can use in the quest to design for this behavior. The chapter quickly takes a look at those tools, and then tackles this specific behavior (password management) in the section on designing and debugging behaviors. Of all the factors related to getting people to perform specific behaviors, motivation is the most difficult to account for. The difficulties associated with motivation are one of the major reasons for the knowledge‐intention‐behavior gap. The chapter takes a quick look at a few of the tactics that behavioral scientists leverage.
