Chapter Abstract:
This chapter begins by a review of the challenges and opportunities for the systems engineering discipline and community in the fourth industrial revolution ecosystem, and their consequences. It presents an integrated view of systems engineering, systems thinking, and data analytics. Modeling and simulation and the goal of data‐driven and evidence‐based systems engineering are an essential part of the fourth industrial revolution. Systems engineering should be data driven, as it is based on engineering requirements, engineering calculations, testing, and modeling and simulations – all of them should be based on data or should create data, but all too often the systems engineers are making decisions based on intuition and/or qualitative assessments. Systems engineers need to be the leaders and the internal entrepreneurs in their companies to initiate and facilitate the needed and recommended changes in the systems engineering processes in view of the challenges and the opportunities of the fourth industrial revolution.
