Chapter Abstract:

In the basic primer on cybersecurity, there are four broad types of controls: preventative, detective, corrective, and compensatory. Preventative controls are the road barriers of the information highway. They are designed to stop an attacker from getting to an asset. If the preventative controls are the road barriers, the detective controls are the motion sensors that let the readers know that someone is in the room. Like the name implies, corrective controls focus on repairing damage during or after an attack. The right way to use all of these controls is by deploying them across systems in a way that achieves defense in depth. This has the effect of putting multiple and diverse barriers (controls) between the attacker and the asset. Having understood our cybersecurity control classes and the strategy for their deployment, the time has come for us to examine the partnership between privacy and cybersecurity controls.
