Chapter Abstract:

Across history, there have been design movements, practices, and individual designers that have been directly anticapitalist, antagonizing the capitalist system, or noncapitalist, operating outside the basic logics of capitalism. These "alternative designs" have created ongoing tensions and dialogue with capitalist or commercial forms of design. There are also historical and contemporary precedents of design practices that demonstrate elements of what postcapitalist design might be.
