Abstract:
The growth of industrial IoT applications accelerated the development of edge computing. Data is processed at the edge of the system, by the device or server, or by a local computer, rather than being routed to a data center, in edge computing. In industrial use cases, edge gateways are interfaced with several sensors, where the software design development of an edge gateway is undertaken by solution architects and developers in order to decide on how to process the data from multiple sensors and implement data analytics. In such situations, if there is no open-source framework, the new software development, testing, and bug fixes (if any) may consume more effort and cost. By using an open-source edge computing framework, these problems can be mitigated to develop a scalable edge gateway software during the development phase. The edge computing framework for the edge gateway used here is EdgeX Foundry which is an open-source framework. Hence, it reduces the development cost as well as latency. EdgeX Foundry based, edge gateway design, and development of applications for edge computing functionalities is described in this paper.
