Abstract:
The basic principles involved in control by digital computer are discussed with special reference to the mathematical model, optimization and the breakdown of costs. Expected future developments are briefly mentioned. A few case histories are given of computer control in South Africa. Automation is illustrated with reference to a few industries such as steel, power generation and tobacco, also its application in the fields of transport, postal services and broadcasting; special reference is made to what has been done in South Africa. Computer-aided design and computer graphics are briefly mentioned. The importance of numerically controlled machine tools for South Africa is dealt with and a summary of the present application in South Africa is given. The Implications of small-scale automation for South Africa are also discussed. Steps already taken to promote and plan for automation in South Africa are mentioned; reference is made to sociological problems and the possible use of unskilled labour. The extent of the present market for automation and control systems equipment in South Africa is estimated.
