An expert system for the design of 3-phase squirrel cage induction motors

This paper deals with the use of an expert system in the comprehensive design process, in particular for the design of squirrel cage induction motors. A comprehensive design evaluation package had previously been developed and it was felt that the expert system could lead a novice in design to produce meaningful input data for the design of a machine of his choice. This paper describes the expert system and shows how easily induction motors can be successfully designed by being guided by the knowledge base included in the expert system. The value of such systems as a teaching aid is illustrated.
