Chapter Abstract:

This chapter focuses on non‐structured query language (NoSQL) and its advantage over relational database management systems (RDBMS). It explains consistency, availability, and partition tolerance (Cap) theorem, atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability (ACID), and basically available, soft state, and eventually consistent (BASE) properties exhibited by various database systems. The chapter presents a comparison explaining the drawbacks of SQL database and advantages of NoSQL database, which led to the switch over from SQL to NoSQL. It also explains various NoSQL technologies such as key‐value pairs, document‐oriented database, graph database, or column‐oriented database. The chapter shows the NoSQL (create, update, and delete) CRUD operations. A database cannot exhibit more than two of the three properties of the CAP theorem. RDBMS exhibit ACID properties. NoSQL databases exhibit the BASE properties. Schemaless databases are those that do not require any rigid schema to store the data.
