Abstract:

In this paper, the design and geometric optimization of spoke-type permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) are presented for solar photovoltaic array fed water pump. Initially, a spoke-PMSM is designed by using basic design equations and then its geometric optimization is carried out to achieve an optimum design objective. The design objective is to enable the operation of spoke-PMSM at maximum efficiency while using minimum quantity of permanent magnets. The motor parameters like stator conductors per slot and dimensions of magnets are varied over a wide range to achieve design objective. Based on this, operating point of optimized motor is selected. Meanwhile, variations of other parameters like inductances and slot-fill factor are also shown to assess the behavior of the motor. To show the superiority of an optimized design, a comparison with initial design is carried out and various performances are reported.
