Abstract:

Developing quality Islamic mobile apps is crucial particularly when it comes to the authentication, reliability and credibility of facts or information about Islam. Due to this reason, this study empirically discovered the constructs that affect the attitude of apps developers, to comply with Islamic work ethics when developing Islamic apps with developers' intention as a mediating effect. Criteria from Mobile Apps Rating Scale (MARS), namely Engagement (EN), Functionality (FC), Aesthetics (AE) and Information (IN) were referred and integrated with the components of Islamic work ethics, namely al-Birr and Masulliyah as the conceptual model of the study. To test the model, a questionnaire survey was conducted and distributed among the novice developers. A total of 193 usable responses were collected through stratified sampling. Invalidating the structural path constructed in the model, an experimental research design was implemented. Hence, hypotheses statements of the paths in the model were tested by using the Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results revealed that the intention of the apps' developer is significantly influenced by only two criteria; functionality and the information factor, while the attitude of the apps' developer is significantly influenced by the intention of the apps' developer him/herself. Based on the findings, it is hoped that in the future, a developer, particularly a Muslim will be attracted to practice Islamic work ethics when developing Islamic mobile apps.
