Chapter Abstract:

Utility poles are typically, and most conveniently, installed using a pole derrick which bores a vertical hole for inserting the structure, and then facilitates its placement. Following initial pole placement, the base is backfilled and thoroughly tamped in layers. In some cases, additional support is required and is provided by a guy and anchor system, with the guy wires connected to guy hooks mounted directly on the pole surface. The practical life span of a utility pole is a function of the pole material and application environment, as well as the inspection and maintenance program.
