Abstract:
A discussion of employing the Global Positioning System (GPS) and geographic information system (GIS) technologies for packet routing strategies in ad-hoc mobile wireless networks is presented. Mobile network architectures and existing packet routing schemes are briefly discussed to illustrate how GPS and GIS techniques can be beneficially employed. Telegeoinformatics, a new discipline that combines wireless communications with GPS and GIS is presented, along with its potential to address several packet routing issues. This paper also presents open issues and research topics in this area that are currently receiving attention.
