Abstract:

In the transportation sector, multimodal hubs are more and more widespread to manage the needs of many passengers that use different means of transport. A hub has to be designed in order to guarantee a mobility service that allows people to move in the most effective way, providing them an efficient network of means of transport, and permitting tourists to exploit as best as possible all the landmarks and attractions of the area where it is located. The aim of this work is to evaluate the case study of Abano Terme city, in the North of Italy, where both the railway station and the public transport system need to be enhanced to offer a better service to tourists visiting the territory. Using the concept of hub and evaluating the actual transport demand, some possible solutions to the problem are proposed and described, in order to improve the transport services of the city. The aforesaid proposal is based on the sustainability concept and on the use of smart mobility systems where electric buses and car sharing services are adopted to reduce emissions and primary energy consumptions.

I. Introduction

Some experts define a transport hub as a station on a “hub and spoke” network, whose main characteristic is the linking between different stations (spoke) that is not direct but through only one station (hub), which is the center of the network itself, and where all the lines of means of transportation are converging to [1]–[3]. A transport hub is a place where passengers and cargos are exchanged using vehicles or other transport modes, which firstly was born in passenger air transportation, when people needed to fly with more than one flight with different companies. The evolution from an airport terminal to a multimodal hub is represented by the Shanghai Hongqiao integrated transport hub, as described in [3]–[5].
