Abstract:

Circular loop antennas have been rigorously studied in the past for RF applications and more recently for the case of dispersive materials at optical wavelengths. The elliptical loop is the more general case which has received considerably less attention. This work extends upon a recent derivation of the electric fields radiated by thin elliptical loops. It is shown that elliptical loops possess interesting behaviors such as the ability to increase the field strength at resonance, simply by pinching a circular loop of the same size. This suggests the possibility of many new and exciting applications to be explored in the future, especially in the optical regime.
