Abstract:

In this paper, the design, implementation and testing of a magnetohydrodynamic propulsion system for a small vessel are presented. The process of designing and constructing a working prototype that utilizes a magnetohydrodynamic propulsion system is carried out. A magnetohydrodynamic propulsion system utilizes the concept that charged particles experience a force when moving through a magnetic field. The design detailed in this report consists of perpendicular electric and magnetic fields across a channel. The electric fields cause charged particles dissolved in the water to move. Once moving, the ions are forced out of the channel and drag water with them. The water movement causes the vessel to be propelled forward, according to Newton's third law. The design utilized has attempted to improve weight efficiency by the inclusion of 3D printed, powdered iron core electromagnets. Test results show the successful implementation of the design. In addition, the feasibility and applicability a magnetohydrodynamic propulsion system are examined.
