Abstract:
Presenting four potential uses of autonomous vehicles in a combined sleeping, office, living and entertainment space, Volvo's 360c concept vehicle is described as a "conversation starter" designed to help people reimagine the way they travel. The design exploits the freedom provided by the absence of a steering wheel and internal combustion engine to rethink the traditional placement of seats. Offering the prospect of door-to-door travel in a first-class private cabin, the company believes that fully autonomous all-electric cars without a human driver will open up new markets for automotive manufacturers, for example in providing an alternative to short-haul air travel for distances of around 300km, avoiding security queues and lengthy waits. In parallel with the unveiling of the 360c, Volvo is proposing a global standard in how autonomous vehicles communicate with other road users. Volvo's Mårten Levenstam says autonomous driving "will have a profound impact on how people travel, how we design our cities and how we use infrastructure."
