Abstract:
Looking more like a stealth fighter than a family runabout, the Karlmann King from Chinese designer IAT Automobile Technology is claimed to be the world's most expensive sport utility vehicle (SUV). Only nine will be built, costing $2.2m (£1.56m) each, made from carbon fibre and steel, and weighing in at around 4.5 tonnes. A 6.8-litre V10 engine produces over 360bhp, transmitted to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission, although the hefty body weight means maximum speed is limited to 140km/h (just under 90mph). Passengers get accessories including a retractable TV, Playstation, mini fridge and coffee machine, while lighting, air conditioning and seat position can all be adjusted using a smartphone app. Making the whole thing bulletproof is an optional extra, and although the default design is a suitably sinister matt black, presumably at this price you can have it any colour you want.
