Chapter Abstract:

Shipboard shore power is 480V, three‐phase, 60 Hz, ungrounded. Due to high power requirements onboard ships, medium‐voltage and high‐voltage shore power have been introduced. The medium‐voltage shore power standard IEC/ISO/IEEE 80005.1 was developed jointly by the IEC, ISO, and IEEE. This chapter shows shore power electrical one‐line diagrams of typical low voltage (LV) and medium‐voltage (MV). The low voltage shore power is 230V, three‐phase ungrounded or 480V, three‐phase ungrounded. The chapter explains various medium‐voltage shore power recommendations as outlined in IEEE/IEC Standard 80005‐1. The high‐voltage (HV) shore supply system shall have a documented voltage supply quality specification. The HV shore supply shall include appropriate rated surge arrestors to protect against fast transient overvoltage surges. Ship electrical equipment shall only be connected to shore supplies that will be able to maintain the distribution system voltage, frequency and total harmonic distortion (THD) characteristics.
