Abstract:
This is an era of Internet and IOT devices where every device needs Internet connection. The Mobile Hotspot (MHS, SoftAP) provided by smartphone is one solution where user cannot find an Access Point (AP) and uses his/her MHS to continue the connectivity to Internet. Smartphone consumes around 10 times more power while MHS is active, however few proposals have been made for power save in MHS which are difficult to commercialize and also would require client side changes. The IEEE 802.11 standard defined power saving techniques which is applicable only for client devices and it is not efficient when acting as MHS. This paper proposes a novel idea which has a hybrid approach called as High Throughput Mode Power Save (HTMPS) and Low Throughput Mode Power Save (LTMPS). Our experimental results show that we can save up to 20% power using the first method and put MHS interface to sleep for 50% of the time during no data activity using LTMPS.
