Abstract:

A new method for direct SEM viewing of fresh plant materials was applied to obtain quick and accurate images of shoot apices differentiating into flower buds on tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) plants. Using this method, it was possible to examine and take vivid SEM photographs of a number of fresh shoot apices and developing flower buds in a short time. The SEM observation revealed that apical domes grew larger at an early stage of flower initiation, then flattened, and finally flower organs, such as sepals, petals, stamens and pistils were formed on the domes in succession.
