Chapter Abstract:

The foundation for HSPA was laid in Release 5 and 6 when High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) were introduced. This chapter presents the channel structure and key procedures with HSDPA and HSUPA. With HSDPA the protocol architecture design and principles of the data and control channel operation are covered as well as key feedback signaling with the Channel Quality Information as well as feedback for the downlink packets to facilitate the physical layer packet retransmission. With HSUPA respectively the architecture and the data and control channels required for HSUPA operation are covered.
