Abstract:
This paper supplements previous work (1997) dealing with surge currents that can be expected through protectors on wireless base station equipment. It presents the results from further modeling and simulation of a lightning strike to a typical base station site to account for nonstandard surge widths in the strike and improved modeling of the site elements. As all surge widths do not readily fit into the spectrum of surges available from commercial surge generator test equipment, the resultant data are normalized to fit a standard 8/20 /spl mu/s surge test waveform by using constant energy or I/sup 2/t calculations. The data is then presented in a form suitable as a qualification standard for use by design and procurement personnel and in the evaluation of products from different suppliers.
