Abstract:

TOPSIS Method is one of the Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) Methods. It is a ranking method. It gives both quantitative and qualitative study of the problem. Topsis Method gives best and quick decision to our real life problems than AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process) and FAHP (Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process) Methods. Hence, in this study TOPSIS Method is applied to a problem of selection of a branch of students for “ALL ROUND EXCELLENCE AWARD” in an engineering college for which the solution is already obtained by AHP. According to T.L. Satty, if the consistency ratio is less than or equal to 0.1, then the matrix is said to be consistent. If the consistency ratio is zero the matrix is said to be absolutely consistent. In this paper the decisions obtained by AHP is compared with TOPSIS Method. It is observed that there inconsistency in the sample data (i.e.: few matrices in the data have consistency ratio is more than 0.1). Hence the ranking of alternatives obtained by both the methods is different. From this comparative study it is clear that if there is any inconsistency in the sample data the decisions differ from method to method.
