Classification of transmission line faults with waveform characterization

Classification of transmission line faults with waveform characterization are presented in this paper. The characteristic signatures of current and voltage waveforms were extracted, and used to classify the cause of faults focusing on lightning strike, tree encroachment and animal contact. Field data of 75 fault events, recorded by digital fault recorders, were investigated to create and test the classification method. The proposed method shows a satisfied performance in classifying fault events.
