Abstract:

We demonstrate the first complex modulation and detection of PAM-4 and PAM-8 using a directly modulated laser with frequency chirp. Through coherent detection and differential phase assisted Viterbi decoding, PAM-4 system shows >9-dB OSNR sensitivity advantage over the intensity-only decision.
