Abstract:
This paper compares the performance of a rectangular microstrip patch antenna at 2.4 GHz on three different types of Metamaterial surfaces (mushroom, slotted, spiral). The substrate material used both in the design of antenna and the metamaterial surfaces is 3 mm thicker wash cotton having a relative permittivity of 1.51. The metamaterial surfaces are first characterized in terms of in-phase reflection and relative surface wave bandgap. These surfaces were then used as a ground plane for the microstrip antenna and it is found that the antenna on the mushroom-like EBG surface gives better performance in terms of gain and efficiency. The proposed antenna can be used in portable and wearable electronics. Simulations are accomplished in CST MWS.
