Abstract:
Robotic applications are vast. One unique application of it is Tornado Ride in amusement parks. From mechatronics engineering education perspective, studying how such ride is designed, constructed and operated are very exciting. In this paper, the authors describe this excitement and rewarding experience when building a working model of the existing Tornado ride. The working model is useful to demonstrate the physical and engineering principles adopted in the design process and in the actual operation of the actual ride. Studying and modelling the existing system reveals many interesting facts due to its sheer size and lifting power, hanging position, rotation and ability to lift up to 40 passengers at the same time. Riding it triggers adrenalin rush with entertaining excitement to both passengers as well as spectators. It is found that such ride is actually a special embedded mechatronics products customized in such a way to be controllable and ride-able to attract visitors to experience with it. The resultant working model is able to imitate many combinations of movements and it comparatively looks similar to the actual ride.
