Abstract:

This paper presents new multimedia Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks which are capable of transmitting voice data efficiently. Fully ATMized networks are characterized by having rerouting function. The rerouting nodes multiplex plural calls going through the same route into one ATM cell, namely shared virtual channel identifier (VCI) cell. The rerouting node occupies totally 71.9 mm/sup 2/ in a 0.6-/spl mu/m triple-metal CMOS technology and the maximum clock rate of this unit is 32 MHz. The multimedia ATM networks can be readily implemented by attaching the rerouting nodes to the standard ATM switches.
