Abstract:

AC induction motor drives range from simple volts per hertz (V/F) control algorithms to complex control algorithms such as adaptive field oriented control or sensorless field oriented control. In many cases, it is desired to have better performance than a V/F drive but with little more complexity. Slip control algorithms can provide better performance by closing the speed loop but may or may not include current control. Field orientation or vector control provides current control and excellent performance but can become difficult to implement. A basic flux vector controller, however, can be very simple to implement and can be the foundation for implementing more complex field oriented techniques. On the other hand, some applications such as an electric vehicle drive may not require the increased complexity and a simple vector controller may be acceptable.
