Abstract:

This article presents an ultra-high-throughput network service called "Netwarp," which provides an instantaneous file transfer service viewed by "timewidth" instead of "bandwidth." Four breakthrough technologies for realizing Netwarp-the PC-ONU (personal computer-optical network unit), network DMA, gigabit shared access, and the Netwarp router-are described. Sustained throughputs above 110 MB/s are achieved with a prototype system developed in our laboratories.
