Abstract:

Following the popularization of photovoltaic home power systems in developing countries, the application of DC fluorescent lamps has grown rapidly. Estimated consumption in 1993 is over 1 million. Lighting is the major load in PV home power systems and the function of lighting is also the main consideration in the evaluation of PV home power systems from the point of view of most rural users. Reduction of load from such lamps could result either in system economy or prolonged daily electricity provision and battery lifetime. Here, the authors examine the development of an energy efficient DC fluorescent lamp for use in such domestic PV power systems.
