Abstract:

The LS-DYNA software was employed to simulate the dynamic response of concrete dam subjected to contact explosion load. Based on the ALE (Arbitrary Lagrange-Euler) algorithm, the full coupled model, including the propagation of shock wave and the interaction between water and dam, was used. The damage results show that it is worse when explosive is in the water compared to when it is on the surface or at the bottom of the water. With emphasis on the case that the explosive is in the water, the dynamic response of concrete dam was simulated. The energies absorbed by dam, reservoir water and dam foundation were obtained. The process of damage evolution of dam concrete and the major principal stress of dam were presented. The analytical results show that the dam is in the most danger when the explosive is in the water and at the certain distance from the bottom of the water.
