Abstract:
Utilities have responded to the significant increase in the number of installed and proposed wind farms by developing specific grid codes derived from those used for conventional generators. The presentation summarizes the main grid code requirements, related to reactive power and voltage control, low voltage ride through (LVRT), and other issues such as control of real power. It provides a technical overview of the LVRT requirements in different jurisdictions. It reviews some of the LVRT solutions available for wind turbines based on doubly fed induction generators (DFIG). The impact of these solutions on the DFIG response is evaluated under different fault and operating conditions. The investigation is carried out on a representative power system benchmark. Solutions are compared from the machine performance and grid voltage response viewpoints. The parameters affecting the performance of the solutions are presented.
