Abstract:
In this work, we present a quantum pathway for forming size-controlled magnetic nanoparticles at room temperature. A quantum size effect, manifested by local energy minima in the electronic shell structure of Co and Fe quantum particles supported by the single-crystal insulating layers, such as Si3N4 and Al2O3 films, is proposed to cause the self-limiting size distribution effect of magnetic nanoparticles. The insulating layer seems to terminate the complication at particle-substrate interface.
