Abstract:

Intelligent network (IN) architecture increases the speed to market of services and features, while providing a greater level of customization. The basic concept and some early uses British Telecom has made of the approach are described. Likely future directions in the technology are also discussed. In intelligent networks, some elements of call processing are moved outside of the switch to an attached computing platform. This computer can then be programmed by the network operator to provide the new feature or service. This processor is called the Service Control Point (SCP). The Digital Derived Services Network (DDSN) which provides premium rate services within the British Telecom (BT) network is described, together with the BT-developed Cashless Services Network.<>
