Abstract:
Progress on coherent optical communication systems is reviewed with particular reference to their readiness for deployment in the field. The basic technology is discussed, together with the state of development of key system components. Performance comparisons are drawn between coherent and intensity modulated systems employing optical preamplifiers.<>
