UHMWPE has revolutionized the orthopedic industry by providing an excellent bearing surface for implants used in total joint arthroplasties of the hip. This paper discusses the formation of plastics, the steps taken to process UHMWPE, the wear characteristics of UHMWPE, and alternatives to UHMWPE in bearing surfaces.
