I. Introduction
Manufacturing systems are one of the application areas where scheduling techniques have their widespread diffusion [1], [2]. Actually, at a medium/short-term planning level, the assignment of jobs to the various resources, as well as the sequencing of their services over such resources, fall within the class of scheduling problems which are commonly dealt with in the scientific literature. Nevertheless, in the authors' opinion, some peculiarities of scheduling models that commonly arise in the field of manufacturing systems engineering, have been seldom underlined in the literature.
