Abstract:

This paper describes an accurate and efficient method to calculate parasitic inductance of complicated interconnects. Whereas the differential/integral equations-based numerical algorithms excel at obtaining accurate representation of parasitic inductance, their inherent numerical approach requires long CPU execution time and thus undermines their otherwise superb parasitic extraction capability. An algorithm capable of rapidly decomposing complicated trace structures using the theory of partial inductance and computes the decomposed structures using established analytical formulas is demonstrated. It is shown that the described technique achieves accuracy comparable to that obtained from a commercial field solver. A realistic package has grounded, floating conductors and current returning conductors. Techniques of extracting inductance of interconnects containing grounded conductors, floating conductors and current returning paths from the inductance matrix generated using the method described earlier are discussed as well.
