Abstract:

The paper presents a software tool for the feasibility analysis of stationary battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the Spanish power system. The user can select among two types of BESS, stand-alone or co-located with renewable power plants, and among three different business models as a function of the energy and balancing markets in which the BESS participates. The tool simulates the operation of the BESS in the selected markets until it reaches its end-of-life (EOL). For this purpose, the tool executes on a rolling horizon basis (day by day) an optimization model aimed to maximize the BESS profit in the selected markets. The model has a 72-h time horizon, and a time resolution consistent with that of the selected markets. The model considers several operational constraints whose parameters are specified by the user. The user can choose between different approaches to consider the cycle aging in the optimization model, and between different criteria to consider when the BESS reaches its EOL. The tool updates the remaining capacity on a weekly basis along the simulation. The tool outputs the investment NPV and IRR, the BESS lifetime, annual cash flows and income in each of the selected markets along its lifetime.
