Abstract:
This article presents an in-depth exploration of the advancement of the phase measurement units (PMUs) in the wide-area intelligent system (WAIS) program at Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Malaysia. TNB, Malaysia’s largest electricity utility, is at the forefront of the energy transition, making significant contributions to generation, transmission, and distribution. TNB’s commitment to reliability is demonstrated by its adoption of PMUs to ensure efficient and robust grid operations. The PMU-based energy management system (EMS) at TNB is an integrated system designed to enhance the grid’s monitoring, protection, and control capabilities. It is based on the linear state estimation (LSE) platform and can utilize both streaming and historical PMU data to perform critical tasks, such as bad data detection; event detection; state estimation; and, most importantly, the creation of the PMU-based state estimator cases.
