Abstract:

This paper deals with the evaluation of magnetic fields produced by d. c. tramways. An integrated numerical model, which simulates the behaviour of the electrical circuit and predicts the magnetic field generated by the currents flowing in the conductors, has been worked out. The results of the model have been validated by comparison with measurements. The predicted magnetic field amplitude never assumes the same order of magnitude of the reference level suggested by ICNIRP and European Community for general public exposure. In the neighbourhood of aerial line, cables and rails, the magnetic field has values, which could cause disturbances to electrical or electronic apparatus. Preliminary evaluations of magnetic field mitigations are examined in the paper.
