Abstract:

Faults in high proportion of new energy delivery systems may lead to large number of new energy units being disconnected from the power grid due to transient overvoltage. Configuring synchronous condensers at new energy plants or collection stations is an effective means to suppress transient overvoltage. This paper proposes a practical configuration method of synchronous condensers for overvoltage suppression in high-proportion wind power system based on greedy strategy. First, an overvoltage suppression validity index based on electrical distance is proposed to evaluate the current most needed position for configuring synchronous condensers. Based on the proposed overvoltage suppression validity index, configuration of the synchronous condensers is carried out under the greedy strategy. The effectiveness of the proposed method lies in its ability to obtain appropriate installation positions for synchronous condensers in a reliable order. Feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach are demonstrated in the case study section.
