Peter G. Katona (S'60–M'65–SM'91) received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1960, and the M.S. and Sc.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, in 1962 and 1965, respectively.
He was on the faculty of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, from 1969 to 1991, and served as Chairman of the department from 1980 to 1988. During 1989–1991, he served as Program Director for Biomedical Engineering and Aiding the Disabled at the National Science Foundation, Arlington, VA. In 1991, he joined The Whitaker Foundation, Arlington, VA, as Vice President for Biomedical Engineering Programs. Since then, he has designed and administered educational programs to enhance the field of biomedical engineering. On July 1, 2000, he was appointed President and CEO of the Foundation. He is the author of over 50 scientific papers on the control of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
Dr. Katona served as president of the Biomedical Engineering Society in 1984–1985, and is now a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and the cardiovascular section of the American Physiological Society.
