Abstract:

In this study, we build a drone-borne ground-penetrating radar (GPR) system for ice thickness detection. The GPR system is composed of a portable vector network analyzer (VNA), a Vivaldi antenna, a GNSS receiver, and a microcomputer. The whole system could be easily mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Then, laboratory experiments were conducted to test the performance of the GPR system. Results show that the radar system can accurately detect the thickness and the relative errors are 3.7% and 2% for the ice samples with actual thicknesses of 5.4 cm and 45.0 cm.
