Abstract:
The Internet of Things (IoT) has brought signifi-cant innovation to various domains, by providing monitoring, visualizing and predicting capabilities, among others. However, the potential of IoT applications in processing marine data for climate change research is yet to be fully explored. A major challenge is to comply with the diverse legislation governing marine data collection and processing across different nations. This may discourage application providers from targeting the marine domain. In addition, the existence of numerous marine data providers worldwide, each utilizing its own interfaces and data formats, might make it impractical to automate the acquisition of marine data at scale. To overcome these chal-lenges, we propose a system that integrates existing marine data providers and incorporates data sovereignty components. These components enable the efficient sharing of marine data while ensuring compliance with applicable legislation. To demonstrate the potential of this approach, we run IoT applications using datasets from different data providers, and we estimate the likely impacts of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions on marine ecosystems.
