Chapter Abstract:
Summary
This chapter gives a brief introduction to the basic physics of the synchrotron light source. We start with a glance at the state‐of‐the‐art of the worldwide storage ring light sources. It is followed by presenting three different methods for synchrotron radiation generation and their related physics. The beam dynamics and synchrotron radiation effects in the storage ring are then presented. We also introduce the principle of low‐emittance lattice and the various design efforts on approaching the diffraction‐limited storage rings. Finally, the history, current status and future perspectives of the storage ring light sources around the world are summarized.
