Chapter Abstract:

Summary

The importance of power conversion to power integrity engineers has come about over only a very short period of time. This chapter develops a basic understanding of the operation of a converter system for computer platforms and thus an ability to understand that behavior as part of the overall analysis in the power integrity design. It discusses some of the key components that make up the buck regulator. These elements include specifically the switches, filter, and the inductor. The chapter also discusses some of the basics with respect to the controller. If people consider the other elements as the instruments in an orchestra, the controller would be akin to the musicians and the conductor directing those mechanisms. Once a basic understanding of the operation and its key elements is obtained, a model may be built that can be used for simulation in SPICE and other programs.
